A senior minister of the government called on opposition parliamentarians not to make comments to the media after visiting former Army Commander and DNA Leader Sarath Fonseka in his prison cell and denied providing special facilities for him.
Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation Minister D.E.W. Gunasekara has told parliament that such comments could place him in a difficult situation.
Gunasekara said that opposition parliamentarians have made contradictory statements as well. He said that while UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara has said that he was served a cup of tea by Fonseka, the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that Fonseka does not even get a cup of tea.
The Minister also denied media reports that Fonseka was given facilities to boil water inside his cell. However, Gunasekara said that Fonseka has been provided with a bed and a mattress following doctor’s orders, a TV following a court order and hot water when asked. (www.colombopage.com)
