The first international commercial ship that is expected to dock at the Magampura Port will be a car carrier ship, carrying 3,000 cars.

Accordingly, at the opening ceremony of the new port which falls on 18 November, the Sri Lanka Navy’s Jetliner carrying Buddhist monks chanting pirith is expected to dock at the port followed by the Japanese car carrier ship, steered by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

According to Government sources, the reason to bring in the car carrier was decided upon due to the port still lacking equipment to offload bulk cargo such as containers. Therefore, the best option was to bring in a car carrier from Japan and offload the vehicles.
