Sri Lanka’s premier racing team, EZY Racing started their 2011 campaign on a very strong note with three of their four drivers who participated in the very first night race held in Kandy, storming their way through to win their respective races.
‘Speed at Night’, a unique road race which was held under lights, was organised by the Kandy Off Road and Adventure Club together with the Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club.
EZY Racing, the reigning Rally Champions for 2010, displayed their true prowess in this, their very first race for the year with Rizvi Farouk and Shafraz Junaid, starting the Mclarens Formula Event at first and second on the grid, and going on to finish in the same order. This provided EZY Racing an outstanding start for the night, unfortunately Junaid who finished second was disqualified later on the grounds of a rolling start.
“It’s great to be back on a winning streak in our very first race itself. As a team we were at full strength and we managed to translate all our hard work into results. We had a very successful Saturday where both Shafraz Junaid and myself managed to qualify in front. We maintained great pace throughout the race and it was quite unfortunate that Shafraz was later disqualified after having his first podium position in just his second formula race” said a jubilant Rizvi Frouk.
Farouk who also participated in the Group SL-GT Super Car category along with Shafraz Junaid, finished third in this event along with his team mate who finished fourth.
EZY Racing’s new kid on the block Mudith Madumarachchi, making his debut race for the team in the Standard Mini up to 1000CC category, was also in peak condition and completed a faultless race, yet again leading from the front to convert his Friday’s pole position into victory. This was indeed a great start for Madumarachchi, considering the fact that this was his very first time on the track with the EZY Racing team who have great plans in store for this promising young driver.
With two wins already in the bag, Sajaad Zuhair, the 2010 Foxhill winner in the Group SL-H up to 1600CC category, provided the icing on the cake by finishing as the undisputed winner of his class. Zuhair who was showing all signs of winning the class from the free practice session, managed to be on pole in Friday’s qualifying race and was simply untouchable from the outset, finishing well ahead of his competitors.
After the race, Zuhair dedicated the result to the team: “I want to thank the whole team for their hard work. This result is just the start of the reward for our efforts. It’s a fantastic result to not only win the race but also to see the entire team doing so well in all the categories we participated in; it’s a great feeling to be back up on top of the podium again”.
Computer manufacturer EZY, who entered the motor racing arena in 2009, has become a firm fixture on the racing track within a remarkably short period, primarily due to their professional approach to motor racing. Chief Executive and Team Boss of EZY Racing, Shafraz Hamzadeen said that their hard work over the last few months saw fruition over the weekend. “We made a conscious decision of not participating in the first couple of races this season in order to get our act together and take motor racing in Sri Lanka to new heights. Today saw the outcome. The fact that EZY Racing won three out of the four events we participated in, is a true indication of how strong we are as a team.”
Hamzadeen who simultaneously launched his limited edition laptop ER3 to coincide with the Kandy Races as a tribute to their 2010 Rally Championship, said “it was indeed a perfect weekend”!
With the racing season just starting and the racing tracks hotting up, EZY Racing intends on further upgrading their cars to provide their drivers with all necessary tools to win their respective championships in the races that lie ahead.
