To help underprivileged children of the Parakramabahu Maha Vidyalaya
Dialog Axiata PLC and The British School recently joined hands with the ‘My Friend’ project to help several underprivileged children of the Parakramabahu Maha Vidyalaya in Narahenpita.
Present on the occasion were Chairman of the My Friend Project Fouzul Hameed, Head of Loyalty and M-Commerce at Dialog Axiata PLC Chinthana Jayasekara, Representatives of the PTA of The British School and several others.
Late last year Dialog Axiata encouraged its thousands of subscribers to donate their Star Points to the ‘My Friend’ Project. The funds thus collected have now been used to provide a wholesome and healthy breakfast to selected needy children at the Parakramabahu Maha Vidyalaya for a period of one year.
Meanwhile the children of The British School joined hands over the past festive season to collect a large number of school stationery items for the ‘My Friend’ Project. Some of these items were donated to the needy children at Parakramabahu Maha Vidyalaya that day. Principal of The British School Dr. John Scarth said, “We gave this project our fullest support. Our children were very enthusiastic about this project and worked tirelessly to collect these school stationery items. With this exercise we have also taught them the importance of giving and sharing, two important values in life, which they appreciate.”
Thanking the donors for their generosity, the Principal of the school Gemunu Weerakoon described this as a service to mankind. “Our school is sixty six years old and has about 350 children on roll. Many of them are from Narahenpita and adjoining areas. We’re particularly touched by the fact that the My Friend Project chose to help our school without us having to ask for help. Our staff works tirelessly to mould the lives of these children and empower them to become responsible men and women in society. This gesture of helping our children will go a long way.”
Chairman of the My Friend Project Fouzul Hameed said that this project was started with the main aim of bringing about a tangible change in lives of the little children around us.
“These children are our future. They need to be fed, clothed and educated. It is our duty to lend a helping hand to the less fortunate around us and make this world a better place. That is what the My Friend Project is all about. I sincerely thank both Dialog Axiata and the British School for partnering with the My Friend Project to make a difference.”
Project Manager of the My Friend Project Nel Gunewardena said that just as responsible corporates, the general public also can be a vital of this noble cause. “Those interested in making financial donations can do so to the ‘My Friend Project’ – Account No: 1110031987, Commercial Bank – Colpetty branch. Those wishing to donate in kind can do so by contacting 0777 354 570. All donations, in cash or kind, will help the My Friend Project reach its target of supporting 1000 needy children in the year 2014.”
