The main opposition United National Party (UNP) Working Committee is scheduled to meet today.
New office bearers are to be picked under the new party constitution at this meeting, the UNP says.
Party sources say that the working committee will try to settle the battle for the party leadership amicably.
The present leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe and Hambantota District Parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa are the main contenders for the party leadership under the new constitution.
The Working Committee is to determine whether it should go for a secret ballot, if a consensus cannot be reached.
The party reforms have to be implemented before 12 April according to the new party constitution. (Colombo Page)
Ravi K calls for leadership council
Colombo district parliamentarian of Sri Lanka’s major opposition United National Party (UNP), Ravi Karunanayaka says that the solution for the leadership crisis of the party is establishing a leadership council.
The MP said that the move could unite the party and win the support of all factions.
Without directly naming anyone, Karunanayaka, who was in an open clash with the UNP leadership contender Sajith Premadasa, accused that the actions of certain persons divide and damage the party.
He said that the results of the local government election showed their reality.
However, Karunanayaka expressed content since the party grew its voter base in this election.
