63rd Independence Day to be held in sacred city of Kataragama

The Government has decided to hold next year’s Independence Day celebrations in the sacred city of Kataragama in the Uva Province.

Deputy Minister of Economic Development Ranjith Siyambalapitiya addressing a public rally in Moneragala revealed the Government’s decision to hold all the celebrations for the 63rd Independence Day, which falls on 4 February 2011, in the Moneragala District.

Kataragama Raja Veediya has been selected as the venue for the Independence Day parade, where the Head of State will address the nation followed by a Guard of Honour with full military honours.

The ‘Deyata Kirula’ exhibition held every year for a week to coincide with the Independence Day will be held from 4 to 11 February in Buttala, in the Moneragala District.

The Deputy Minister said that several development projects at a cost of Rs. 15 billion had been earmarked for the entire district. The Government plans to complete several infrastructure facilities needed for the livelihood of the people in the district before the event.

The infrastructure development projects slated for the district includes renovation of irrigation tanks and reservoirs, roadways, hospitals and other common facilities.
