President opens Siyasetha Sevana housing scheme for urban dwellers

Untitled-2The Siyasetha Sevena multi-housing scheme, built for those living in houses with minimum facilities in the Colombo Municipal Council area, was ceremoniously declared open by President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday.

The housing scheme built with an investment of Rs. 1,330 million consists of 266 housing units. The amount spent by the Urban Development Authority per one unit is Rs. 5 million. A single house occupies 450 square feet of space and consists of two bed rooms, a verandah, a kitchen and a balcony. The houses were also provided with required sanitary facilities.

The housing scheme was built under the Divisaru Puravara program developed by the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development. The residence of Tower Flats in Maligawatta, Velupullai Watta in Rajagiriya and Abeysingharama Road in Rajagiriya are the beneficiaries of this housing scheme. 

In line with the construction of this housing scheme, the adjoining road network will be expanded while infrastructure such as community halls will also be developed. 

Up to 25,000 housing units are expected to be provided from 2016 to 2020, under the Divisaru Puravara program. Accordingly, construction work for 19,072 housing units has been started with an investment of Rs. 100 billion. 

President Sirisena who opened the housing scheme by unveiling a special plaque also made an observation tour in the premises, after which he symbolically handed over the keys of the houses to their owners.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister Field Martial Sarath Fonseka, Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Faizer Mustafa, Deputy Ministers Eran Wickramarathne and Lasantha Alagiyawanna also participated in this occasion.   -
