The construction of new road along the west bank of west Beira Lake adjoining the former Army Headquarters, Baladaksha Mawatha, Colombo 2 was recently completed by Access Engineering PLC.

Colombo is currently seeing the worst of vehicular traffic situations with the increasing number of vehicles entering the city promises every day. Out of all the arterial roads driving traffic towards the city of Colombo, Colombo- Galle Road (A2) is reported to be one of the highly-congested roads that require urgent attention.

With the completion of many hotel and condominium developments within the city, especially along the Colombo-Galle road, the anticipated traffic volume is scheduled to be doubled bursting the city roads at seams.

In order to ease out the anticipated complexities, the Colombo Municipality Council initiated the construction of a ring road from Colombo-Galle Road (0+000) to Justice Akbar Mawatha (1+186.27) creating a direct pathway to access the upcoming hotels and condominium developments in and around Galle Face and along the Galle Road without disturbing the current flow of traffic.

The construction work was entrusted to Access Engineering PLC and the scope of the work included the construction of 1.15 km long four lane carriageway where the width of a single lane would be 3.3m.The road is constructed along with a 1.8m wide foot path on right side and a 0.75m wide food path on left side and a 7m wide two lane connection road connecting to the Galle-Colombo Road.

The scope of the work has involved several soft ground treatments as the involved ground areas have previously been filled with demolished road debris. Access Engineering has worked in full force to ensure smooth removal of army officer’s building from the site with minimum disturbance to the surrounding commuters and neighbourhoods.
