The Management Club popularly known as TMC, having commenced in February 2002, celebrates its 15th Anniversary in 2017.
TMC was formed under the auspices of The Chartered Management Institute – UK Sri Lankan Branch, when the outgoing Branch President for 2000-2001 Fayaz Saleem, now President Emeritus of TMC, observed that there was a need for two institutions in Sri Lanka, with one being for professional managers, who needed to develop their personality, work ethics and leadership skills, through constant interaction with those in their field, as well as those in other disciplines, to emerge as good effective managers. This idea was immediately taken up by the Incoming President of The Chartered Management Institute/SL Branch for 2001/2002, Anil Weeratunge and he together with Fayaz Saleem supported by some senior members of the Chartered Management Institute, serving on the Ex Co, were successful in making it a reality, but not without much hard work, identifying a suitable host venue, formulating a code of ethics, preparing a constitution and attracting members of what was a pioneering exercise. The other was setting up a much needed leadership institute which is of much importance now than before. However, unfortunately this is yet to become a reality.
TMC was inaugurated on 12 February2002, at a ceremony at the Galle Face Hotel, who became their host hotel. This function was officiated by Linda Duffield the then British High Commissioner for UK in Sri Lanka. Having its premier club in Colombo now located at the Galadari Hotel, it has successfully expanded its branches to Mount Lavinia, Kalutara, Panadura and Negombo.
TMC would like to acknowledge the yeoman service rendered by The Management Club’s CSR arm, Enable The Disabled, which was chaired by Charmaine Vanderhoeven for nine years, ably assisted by Jazayaar Hassendeen and a team of volunteers.
Over the years The Board of Management of The Management Club, was chaired by well recognised professionals in the business community, Founder President Fayaz Saleem, followed by Col Faizur Rahman, Athula Jayasekera, Deepal Abeysekera, Nasser Majeed and currently Murali Prakash.
TMC facilitated several meaningful management seminars and workshops including last year a series of ‘Members Meet’ presentations, with eminent speakers, and currently the ‘Smart Manager Series’ which will continue till end 2017. Fellowship events like the Fun Motor Rally, and The Bowling Tournament, will continue on an annual basis.
TMC Membership is by invitation, with many benefits, with more to be added in the future. TMC has created a brand of its own, supported by its valuable sponsors over the years. Each Club has their own membership, however all benefits, and access to locations are common to everyone. More new locations may be identified in the coming years.
TMC extends its gratitude to the management of Galadari Hotel for providing the space to have their own Club House and to the DFT for providing a page every fortnight exclusively for TMC.
