In the recent past, Sri Lanka’s business world has seen some new entries from emerging sectors such as fashion and design. Among these is an unique business venture called ‘Push’, Sri Lanka’s first designer skateboard brand that will be entering Sri Lanka’s retail sphere at the reputed department store chain Cotton Collection.
The designer behind Push is young graphic designer Hash who is part of a new breed of young designers emerging with the support of the ‘Centre for Creative Enterprise’ supported by the AOD design campus and Venture Engine that helps young design graduates convert their creative talent in to real businesses.
“During my studies in Graphic Design at AOD, I was challenged throughout, to come up with something new. I’m lucky to have found a campus that not only gave me the correct education but also cared about my dreams and supported me in every way to make them come true. I’m thankful to Venture Engine and Cotton Collection too for their support,” said Hash following PUSH’s successful launch. Skateboarding is an emerging youth culture in Sri Lanka. PUSH skateboards’ founder and designer Hash, uses her knowledge in graphic design to utilise South Asian inspiration to bring this youth culture closer to young minds.
Linda Speldewinde, founder and managing director of AOD design campus and an avid supporter of young design entrepreneurs and design industries also commented saying that this is a notable moment for Sri Lanka’s creative industries, where talented young designers are contributing to the business world with fresh, creative ideas: “The AOD Centre for Creative Enterprise was launched with the mission to make design an integral part of Sri Lanka’s business world by strengthening creative-led industries. The beginning of this comes by encouraging young design entrepreneurs like Hash to set up design-led businesses like PUSH. More will come from the AOD Centre for Creative Enterprise in the coming years and I’m confident that together with the established businesses, these entrepreneurs will constitute a strong creative industry for Sri Lanka”
Prajeeth Balasubramanium of Venture Engine, who supported the brand, said that PUSH is among the first group of successful businesses launched by his entrepreneur support programme.
“We want to encourage entrepreneurship. Graduate start-ups are not easy but organizations like the AOD Centre for Creative Enterprise has helped us make it possible for young designers like Hash; this is a new business and the first of its kind in Sri Lanka,” he added.
