C.W. Mackie PLC, a diversified business conglomerate with over 100 years business experience in Sri Lanka, is aggressively expanding its industrial products sector by focusing on on-going infrastructure construction development in Sri Lanka. As per the company information the industrial products sector of the company has shown a significant YTD growth for both its top-line and bottom-line respectively. Recently the company was able to secure the world renowned, prestigious Italian power generation brand MOSA which is widely available in all parts of the world. Following are excerpts of the Interview with C. W. Mackie PLC Executive Director, Internal Trading Activities Mangala Perera about this new brand addition: Q: What is your rationale on the company’s focus on industrial products? A: As you are aware, in the post war era, Sri Lanka’s infrastructure activities and construction industry have shown a tremendous growth. If we take the last two to three years, the construction industry growth rate for 2011/12 was 18.7% and 21.6% respectively. That was a very high growth momentum. We can see the first half of 2013 is also continuing a similar growth momentum of 17.9% over the corresponding period of 2012. So, this is a huge opportunity for us. Therefore, we have decided to focus on this category to capitalise on the existing and new opportunities arising in the industry. Q: What kind of Industrial products will C.W. Mackie be dealing with? A: Basically our product portfolio consists several reputed international brands and specially, we deal with six main product categories, those are welding electrodes, welding equipment category, light engineering equipment/accessories, power engineering products, workshop and machinery tools and industrial refrigeration. These six categories cover considerable portion of the industry and we are in the process of adding new categories to our existing business lines. Our brand portfolio includes leading international brands such as Danfoss, Chosun welding electrodes, premier brand S/S product range , Ewac Alloys , ESAB , Dynaweld , Frescold , Roller , Icool , Huutoan and latest addition is the MOSA brand. Q: What is the private and public sector involvement/contribution in the present growth momentum of the construction sector? A: Mainly, we have identified five sectors - road construction, bridges, public facilities, apartments and housing schemes, and irrigation systems. At the same time, credit granted by financial institutions to private sector for construction activities increased, reflecting the momentum of private sector construction activities. As per the price index compiled by ICTAD (Institute of Construction Trading and Development), costs of construction activities have slightly gone down in the first half of 2013 compared to the corresponding period in 2012. That is very much encouraging and the private sector involvement for the construction activities is considerably high compared to the previous years. As far as the public sector construction projects are concerned, there are so many road development activities taking place, including express way/highway development, rehabilitation projects, construction of bridges and development of railroads together with regional development programs contributes substantially to the growth momentum in the sector. Q: From a marketing point of view, do you think lifestyle changes also contribute to the growth in the construction sector? A: Certainly. We can see lot of life style changes taking place in the society today, especially when consumers upgrade themselves to the middle income category. As a country, we are moving towards $ 4,000 per capita income by 2016. We can see the growing middle income class in Sri Lanka. New private hospitals are coming up, private universities; educational centres are being put up constantly. Luxury apartments in the city are increasingly being considered as housing options to cater to the growing middle class due to life style changes. All these have a direct impact on the construction industry. Q: Can you elaborate on your latest product MOSA?
