Commercial Credit PLC Chairman Vagdevi Fernando was recently presented with an award by Sthree Mela (Voice of Sri Lankan Women) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Sri Lanka’s financial services industry.
Governor of the Central Province Tikiri Kobbekaduwa presented the award to Fernando at a well patronised event at the Kandy City Centre and organised by Voice of Sri Lankan Women which is headed by Mrs. Visakha Dharmadasa in Kandy.
Other awardees at this event were Lalitha Dissanayake (Public Services), Jean Arasanayagam (English Literature), Pearl Stevens (Social Service), Ena de Silva (Batiks) and Chandra Ranaraja (First Woman Mayor of Kandy)
Speaking on behalf of all the awardees, Fernando said that she was happy and proud that women were finally being recognised for the work they do for society. “It is very difficult for women to enter into a man’s world. But now with the formation of these associations, women could now forge ahead. This reception is proof that women are being recognised.”
She thanked everyone for their participation and wished the Association ‘Voice of Sri Lankan Women’ the very best. This event is part of numerous district level celebrations of the achievements of Sri Lankan women and organised by Sthree Mela (Voice of Sri Lankan Women). It will culminate in a gala celebration at the BMICH in Colombo in December this year under the theme ‘The Story of Sri Lankan Women… from Regional to National to International levels’.
Fernando has been at the helm of Commercial Credit PLC as its Chairman for the past 23 years and steered the company to greater heights during this period with her keen business acumen. A relatively new entrant into the financial services industry, the company’s rapid turnaround to become one of the most notable success stories in recent history has garnered it the trust, recognition and respect of the industry. Relentless in its pursuance of excellence, a rapidly growing customer base and an increasing business portfolio have seen Commercial Credit embark on a strategic but fast-paced expansion programme.
