‘Architect 2016 of SLIA’ on 16 February

‘Architect 2016 of SLIA’ will take place on 16 February at the BMICH Colombo under the theme ‘Flows: Touching the Void’. 

The Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with Sponsors, who will power SLlA’s Architect 2016 – an event which comprises the Inauguration, the National Conference, Architect 2016, Members’ Work and Trade Exhibition, Annual General Meeting and the Fellowship Night.

Lead by the Alumex Group as the Strategic Sponsor, who has held that ‘top spot’ for the past six years, the MOUs were signed at Waters Edge recently amidst a large gathering of members of the trade and allied professionals.

Ranjanas Ceramic Ltd., and True Value Products Ltd., also staunch Sponsors of SLIA over the years, were joined by Nippon Paint Lanka Ltd. as the Associate Sponsors, while Asoka Glass & Mirror Co., Abans Engineering Ltd., and Access Projects Ltd. signed as Event Sponsors of the Fellowship Night. D.P. Jayasinghe Piling Co. Ltd. and Hayleys Electronics Lighting Ltd. are the Co-Event Sponsors

The Exhibition consists of more than 300 stalls and the anticipated crowd exceeds 100,000 including the general public, professionals and students. A wide range of products and services related to the construction field will be displayed. A separate area will be allocated to display the work of architects and students. Sri Lanka Institute of Architects assures to deliver the opportunity to observe various quality products and services with the latest international technology in the construction industry. 

Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) Law No. 1 of 1976 enacted by the National State Assembly vested statutory powers with the SLIA. One of the main objectives of SLIA to promote and advance the study, practice and application of, and research in architecture and kindred subjects, and the arts and sciences connected herewith.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (Amendments) Act No.14 of 1996 enacted by the Parliament of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, has further reinforced the statutory powers vested in the SLIA. The Architectural Registration Board (ARB) established under the amended act, controls and protects the use of the name Architect and its derivatives. 

Sri Lanka Institute of is also a body that not only maintains close associations with the professional bodies of the region but also international. SLIA is a member of Architect Regional Council Asia (ARCHASIA), Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), International Union of Architects (UIA) and South Asian Association for Regional Corporation of Architects.

Sri Lanka Institute of Architects has successfully completed several Corporate Social Responsibility projects in various districts in Sri Lanka. A few projects are:

• School awareness program which was held in the North to educate the students. The aim was to bridge the ethnic gap between North and South by using students.
• Retrofitted a very old school building to make awareness among the Northern people to protect such buildings which carries a significant architectural value. Rehabilitation building for spinal cord injured patients.
• Members Exhibition Architecture Clinic at Ratnapura.

SLIA looks forward to carry out more Corporate Social Responsibility projects in the future as it would be an effective means of carrying forward the profession of architecture to the society and be more responsive to the needs of the society.
