Access Engineering Ltd., the leading value engineering solutions provider in Sri Lanka, successfully concluded a four-day e-waste management program on 6 June, which was organised in conjunction with 2012 World Environment Day celebrations.
The program, themed ‘Green Economy through E-Waste Management’ is part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and commenced operations on 3 June in collaboration with Ceylon Waste Management (Pvt) Ltd., the only BOI-approved organisation for waste recycling in the country.
Over 2.4 tons of electrical and electronic waste were collected during this period and was handed over to Sudesh Nandasiri, Managing Director of Ceylon Waste Management (Pvt) Ltd. by Dr. Prabath Karunanayake, Head of Human Resources of Access Engineering at a special ceremony held at the Access Towers Car Park in Colombo.
The program effectively collected many unusable electrical and electronic waste items which varied from computer peripherals, mobile/land phones, fridges and audio/video equipment to TVs, printers, scanners, bulbs and batteries.
While the public was invited to drop off their e-waste at the Access Towers Car Park or its Projects Office in Boralasgamuwa, the company also offered the public free pick-up of e-waste from their homes or offices and presented tokens of appreciation to all those who supported the cause.
Additionally, a team from Access travelled in and around the Colombo area to educate the public on e-waste management and its benefits to people and the environment.
Access Engineering is planning to carry out the e-waste management program with the help of Access employees and their families on a daily basis with the provision of permanent e-waste recycling bins. This will join its ongoing paper recycling program ‘Think Green’ as the next initiative in making Access Engineering a greener and a more sustainable organisation.
