The theme of ETD (Enable the Disabled) is to create awareness in society, both corporate and individuals. It is important that we include and welcome people with disabilities into our organisations, educational systems, and society and appreciate them for what they can do, rather than keep them apart or sidelined, just because they are different.
Sri Lanka has a long way to go before it becomes a disabled-friendly nation. These special persons are standing up to be recognised, accepted and included. They are not asking for charity or sympathy. ‘Empathy’ is the buzzword.
ETD in its journey over the years, has endeavoured to create this awareness, and supported by you and me, can and will change the mindset of Sri Lankans, to be internationally recognised as a disabled-friendly nation. It’s a long walk, but together we can do it.
We need to take away the perceptions or stigma that is attached to these special persons. We need to take a good look inside us and ask the question ‘are we walking the talk’ or just giving lip service, by seeming to do things that will bring merit to ourselves or the donors who support these initiatives.
Stop, think, ponder and decide and then take action. Support ETD in its efforts to bring about a change, Let it begin with you.
(A note from ETD Immediate Past President Charmaine Vanderhoeven.)
