The arrogance and pompous nature of the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister has shocked the private sector.
The callous way in which the PM and his Finance Minister are attacking the private sector is unexplainable for a UNP-led Government. People voted not for a UNP Government but for Maithripala Sirisena. Therefore, it is imperative that he acts as the President and prevents people like the Prime Minister and his Finance Minister from taking their frustration out on the private sector.
The UNP was in the Opposition for 10 long years not because of the private sector but because Ranil Wickremesinghe was no match for Mahinda Rajapaksa. The Prime Minister and the Finance Minister must realise that they both do not have the popular vote. They are living on borrowed time.
For example, instead of sacking the Governor for the bond fraud, to hide the bond fraud the Prime Minister unnecessarily took on the private sector and discredited a few members of the private sector to cover up the sins of the Governor’s actions. That is not how a Prime Minister should conduct himself.
The involvement of UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrema in the economic affairs of the Government must also be stopped by the President.
We therefore urge President Maithripala Sirisena to please act as the President and ensure that there is a proper policy for the private sector and the Cabinet takes decisions for the private sector, not a few people who are hell-bent on destroying the private sector.
Business confidence is at its lowest possible level, decisions are changing from day to day and the stock market is dead. People like Dr. Harsha de Silva and Eran Wickramaratne are silent about corruption. The change we all expected has not been realised in all its forms. Sri Lanka has walked into a bigger crisis with Mr. Sirisena.
