Which democratic country tolerates and allows the executive president and the first citizen of a country to continue when he violates the country’s constitution when proven with facts by the Supreme Court? And now he allows hundreds of its citizens be scarified for his personal agenda by ignoring international and national intelligence reports of an imminent attack on the country by terrorists.
The presidential coup of 26 October 2018 to stay in power for another five years failed thanks to the judiciary but made our country a joke among the international community. We are yet to recover from that shocking act of President Sirisena that drew investors and foreigners out of this country. Since then he has grabbed cabinet portfolios including law and order that he should not be holding and appointing his henchmen to run institutions. This anti-democratic behaviour is a sign that he was not willing to give up the very same presidency that he wanted to abolish and promised the nation in 2015.
Investigate yourself Mr. President!
We the citizens are not interested in his personal problem with the Prime Minister; he has to be accountable for what he does as per the law of the land; it is shocking to hear that he had not noticed that the Prime Minister, the Deputy Defence Minister and the Finance Minister were not available for his security council meetings since 20 December 2018.
It is indeed a joke for him to appoint a committee to investigate this when he must investigate himself. It is also shocking to know that when he travels for his personal holidays overseas he has not decided to appoint a defence minister with necessary powers who could summon the security council, which we saw as when the Prime Minister called for the meeting in his absence they did not turn up, obviously due to his orders over the telephone to authorities over the second citizen’s command.
He also has appointed a joker as his defence secretary who is trying to brush aside clear intelligence reports and trying to paint a picture that this was something normal when his own armed forces heads were not notified to take needed action or the Parliament to bring in necessary legislation on time to act upon. It is now clear the Security Council has been used to prepare for the next election since the failed coup.
25-year-old same leader party, that has lost its spine!
Wickremesinghe may be having another medal and a Guinness book plan for himself when he celebrates 25 years as the leader of the UNP since 1994. What a waste of a party and its young talent to say the least! Since the deaths of Gamini, Lalith, Premadasa and Ranjan, Wickremesinghe made the UNP his private asset whilst the Rajapaksa family still thinks the country belongs to them.
The spineless leadership of the current UNP led by Ranil Wickremesinghe tolerated all the dirty work of Sirisena including the coup, probably to cover some of their own leaders who continued robbing of the country through the Central Bank bond auctions which was introduced during the Rajapaksa regime.
It’s like child’s play when PM tells the country that he was not invited to the Security Council meetings, once an irreversible damage has been done by a horrendous act of terrorism to the country that we love. It was his duty to take it up at the Cabinet and the Parliament and should have made merry hell in front of the public when he as the second citizen was no more part of the Security Council after 20 December 2018. It’s a disgrace to the post of a Prime Minister to be a cry baby to say the least once the damage is done.
We need new leaders like in Ukraine
It is time that we need a complete leadership change of this country, we do not need people who have governed for 20, 30 years to be back on the game. It’s time to remove such weak and rogue leaders. Neither do we want military heroes of wars who ran away from the country and had medically condemned themselves to service in the northern battle areas during the battle with the LTTE era to come and preach and lead us as they too have blood on their hands by killing civilians and media men. We all know it is the soldiers who won the battle for us in 2009 with great sacrifices they would have done it in 1987 if India did not interfere.
So, we must be careful when praising our politicians who will sell anything including soldiers’ bravery to stay or come into power. It is better to bring a young joker president like in Ukraine as people of this country will soon lose confidence in democracy if this is allowed to continue after 2020.
If the UNP wants to face the next election, they need to have a leader with a spine to call a ‘spade a spade’ and the party needs to impeach the current leader of the country at this eleventh hour for his irresponsible acts, it’s a need of the hour now, it happened in Algeria and its happening in Sudan for God’s sake!
