I have regularly paid Municipal rates for the last 30 years or more and hold receipts for the payments. It seems that my name does not appear in their records as the ratepayer. But I have regularly paid rates sometimes calling over personally at the Municipality.
How did the Municipality issue receipts in my name all these years if I was not registered as the owner/occupier? As far as I am aware both the owner and the occupier are liable under the law to pay Municipal rates. I am not aware if the law has been amended?
I have registered with the Colombo Municipality 30 years ago as the owner of the premises and have obtained certificates from the Municipality to be submitted to the banks, etc. for loans. I am now told to register myself as the ratepayer again. I fail to understand why the Colombo Municipal Council can’t check its records without harassing the ratepayers.
Will the Mayoress kindly look into this matter and take appropriate action against the Municipal Assessor and or the Municipal Treasurer without harassing the ratepayers?
