With reference to the column by Ravi Perera titled ‘Garbage without, garbage within’ published on 30 July which stated that Hayleys Free Zone is the “importer,” the ompany has issued the following clarification
Despite continuous pointing out and clarifications made by Hayleys Free Zone, we find certain groups and individuals with vested interest trying to direct accusations to one of Sri Lanka’s largest conglomerates as the owners or importers of the mattresses which were imported for re-processing and re-exporting.
The business of free zone facilities under the hub concept is a game changer and it should be encouraged rather than to be curtailed. We as a nation must be more intelligent to have the necessary procedures in place to ensure we can open our ports to modern business requirements, but at the same time maintain high level of checks and balances through intelligent means, that do not allow any users to either exploit, misuse or abuse the facilities. To achieve this, there are enough and more methods through modern technology.
As the export fraternity of this nation we must safeguard the image of our country and our business and brands. We cannot afford to sit back and watch individuals trying to create a perception on credible companies, with an obvious hidden motive or agenda. Businesses must not be the shield or become the targets and victims of a political crossfire.
We must also rebuke any parties seeking political millage of an operational crisis which can be handled by the authorities. We should not tolerate baseless allegations levelled against mature business tarnishing their reputation and invariably the country’s image in the eyes of the world.
It is prudent for any institute or individual to report with responsibility after understanding the concepts of the business clarifying all the facts rather than arriving at conclusions in haste.
