Bringing relief to 6 m people
Work on building 1,000 rural bridges ceremonially commenced in 20 districts islandwide on Tuesday, 18 November, at 10:40 a.m.
They are being constructed under the program to build 1,210 rural bridges to shorten the distance between village and town.
Ministers, Parliamentarians and other people’s representatives participated in ceremonies held in 1,000 sites island-wide. Parallel to this 210 bridges already built under the program were also declared open.
The bridges now under construction will be ready for public use next year. Seventy-five percent of the country’s population lives in rural areas.
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa is directing the program under the ‘Mahinda Chinthana’ vision for bringing prosperity to villages by shortening the distance between the village and town through rural bridges.
