“We will not allow our children to be use as bait by certain groups with ulterior motives,” said President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday.
“Some interested people are trying to destroy the education of the children and use them as pawns for their needs,” he added.
The President said this after opening the Mahindodaya Technical Laboratory at Thalava Maha Vidyalaya, Anuradhapura.
The President requested politicians not to mislead school children for political gains. “Every child in this country is ours. If they are misled, all this development carried out for the country will become meaningless,” he said.
President Rajapaksa recalled that youth were burnt on tyres in the years of 1988-’89 and many died due to terrorism. “They were the young generations of our country. The young generation is the strength which contributes to the development of this country. When they are misled like this, we will lose that valuable human resource,” the President stated.
“The education system which was limited to a selected few people in Colombo was brought to the village by this Government. Some people are resentful about the opportunities we provide to the children in villages to come up in education,” the President said.
