The Colombo High Court yesterday sentenced drug kingpin Samantha Kumara, alias Wele Suda, to death.
Colombo High Court Judge Preethi Padman Surasena sentenced the international drug dealer to death on charges of possessing of 7.05 grams of heroin in 2008. The sentence was delivered when his case was heard yesterday. However, Wele Suda has been prosecuted in connection with two other cases before the Colombo High Court and the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. Wele Suda was arrested in Pakistan and brought to Sri Lanka on 14 January 2015 by the CID in connection with a large number of cases connected to drug dealings. He has reportedly amassed a huge fortune from drug trafficking and fled the country with his wife last year when police moved to apprehend him.
During interrogation by the CID, Wele Suda revealed the names of over 30 persons allegedly involved in the drug racket in the country including a Colombo District parliamentarian and a former Inspector General of Police.
