Economic affairs spokesperson for the UNP and its Kotte organiser Dr. Harsha de Silva last week establishing his Balamandalaya in grand style said that in the next UNP administration he will make sure that the people of Sri Lanka will benefit from development. Taking a broad swipe at the current regime where he said benefits are enjoyed by a handful close to the top the candidate for Colombo district said the time had come for members of his party to get down to business now to take the message to the people and start the campaign to topple this government. Having formed over forty branches as well as women’s and youth sub branches within those Harsha was able to launch his branch Executive Committee at a large gathering of over five hundred members at Sirikotha, the UNP headquarters in Kotte. Under the reinvigorated grass root network building program of the party Kotte became only the second electorate in the Colombo district to establish a Balamandalaya. Many others are to follow suit soon. By virtue of being the organiser for Kotte Harsha became ex-officio Chairman of the Balamandalaya while Padma Vidanagamachchi, a long standing member of the UNP women’s branch was elected President of the Lak Vanitha movement and young lawyer Senura Abeywardena, who incidentally is the son of former General Secretary of the UNP late Harsha Abeywardena, was elected President of the Youth League; both uncontested. The function was graced by UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and General Secretary Tissa Attanayake along with an unprecedented crowd of cheering party activists.
