Former DIG Vass Gunawardena, his son Ravindu Gunawardena and four other police officers filed an appeal yesterday challenging the death sentence against them delivered by the Colombo High Court earlier.
They were sentenced to death on 27 November by the High Court for committing the murder of businessman Mohamed Shyam in 2013.
Sub Inspector Indika Bamunuge, Police Constable (PC) Gamini Sarathchandra, PC Priyanka Sanjeewa and PC Kelum Ranga were the four police officers who filed an appeal yesterday along with Gunawardena.
Two weeks ago Gunawardana’s wife Shaamali Perera said at a media briefing that her husband was innocent and he would file an appeal as soon as possible.
