Indian MDMK leader Vaiko and CPI’s Tamil Nadu secretary D Pandian, besides 400 party workers, were taken into custody by Tamil Nadu policeyesterday for trying to stage a protest in Chennai over the alleged disrespect caused to the mortal remains of slain LTTE chief Prabakaran’s mother, Parvathy Pillai, in Sri Lanka.
The protesters alleged that the Lankan army had “caused disrespect” to the remains of Parvathy, who died at a private hospital in Jaffna recently following illness.
The protesters also demanded closure of the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission and tried to march towards it but they were not granted permission for the protest, the police said.
Those taken into custody included Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P Nedumaran.
