Washington, DC: The United States Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues, in the Office of Global Criminal Justice at the Department of States Stephen J. Rapp will visit Sri Lanka from 6 to 11 January 2014. The State Department Spokesperson announced Friday that during his visit Ambassador Rapp will meet with a broad cross section of government officials and political and civil society leaders on a range of issues focusing on Sri Lanka’s justice, accountability, and reconciliation processes, the State Department said. This is Ambassador Rapp’s second trip to Sri Lanka as Ambassador-at-Large. He visited Sri Lanka in February 2012 just before the US presented a resolution on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva in March 2012. The US official’s visit this time again ahead of the UN Human Rights Council Sessions due to commence on 3 March in Geneva will be viewed as crucial since the Sri Lankan Government is under pressure to expedite implementation of Lesson Learnt and Reconciliation Commission recommendations.
