A UPFA candidate for upcoming Southern Provincial Council (SPC) elections was arrested yesterday for assaulting and obstructing the duty of a police officer recently.
Former Southern Provincial Council member Ajith Prasanna was arrested in Colombo, police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.
Prasanna was seen in an amateur video, dressed in clothing similar to that worn by the military, pushing a policeman who tried to obstruct him and several UPFA supporters from taking part in a march, in violating of election laws, after handing over nominations last week for the Southern polls.
Senior police officers are also seen in the video being involved in an argument with the ruling party member who was later allowed to proceed.
