UPFA says professionals and youth figure in nominations

The ruling UPFA said yesterday that it was nominating a large number of professionals and youth as candidates for the Western and Southern Provincial Councils.
The Treasurer of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Minister Dallas Alahapperuma Minister said that the UPFA is nominating 18 lawyers, four engineers, two doctors, seven artistes and nine from the teaching service including Principals and Educational Directors and one journalist and several youths as UPFA candidates.
Former Provincial Council Minister Udaya Gammanpila has been appointed to lead the UPFA group in the Colombo District. Former Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga will lead Gampaha District and the leadership of the Kalutara Distirct has been handed over to the former Provincial Minister Jagath Angage.
In the Southern Province the Galle District UPFA leader will be Shan Wijelal De Silva - the former Chief Minister of the Southern Province. The former Provincial Minister Chandima Rasaputra will be the leader of the Matara District and the former Chairman of the Southern Province Somawansa Kodagoda has been appointed as the UPFA leader for the Hambantota District.
Alahapperuma said that this election will go into the history as many youths and intelligentsia are contesting from the United Peoples Freedom Alliance. He said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa gave instructions to the Nomination Board and the Election Steering Committee to give maximum possible nominations to the professionals and youth.
