The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) says it will prepare to contest the next election independently.
UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera said that while the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United National Party (UNP) were currently working together in the Government, the SLFP with the UPFA would contest the next election separately.
Amaraweera said that the current cohabitation Government would not change for at least five years as an election could not be held any time soon.
He also said that there were attempts to split the SLFP but the public must ensure the SLFP remained united and all parties worked together with the Government.
Amaraweera said the cohabitation Government was formed to develop the country and not steal from the country.
He rejected allegations that the SLFP and UNP were protecting any wrongs committed by both sides since they were in a cohabitation Government.
The Fisheries Minister said that by working together the Government was able to prevent an international war crimes investigation on Sri Lanka. “We can safely say there is no international war crimes probe on the country,” he said.
The Minister said that the international community had now changed its attitude towards Sri Lanka and was assisting Sri Lanka in many ways. (Colombo Gazette)
