All religious communities and ethnic groups will be represented in the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) group contesting from the Gampaha District in the Western Provincial Council election. They will hand over their nominations on Wednesday (5).
The 43 candidates representing eight political parties include media personnel, lawyers, educationists, and intellectuals. The parties are the Jathika Hela Urumaya, National Freedom Front, Deshavimutki Janatha Party, Ceylon Workers Congress, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Communist Party of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Economic Development Minister and SLFP National Organiser Basil Rajapaksa is the Gampaha District’s UPFA Leader.
This time 40 provincial councillors will be selected to represent Gampaha District. The number of registered voters in the district is 1,509,076. The total population is 2,294,641 belonging to 593,317 families living in 13 Divisional Secretarial areas.
The UPFA group headed by former Chief Minister and Minuwangoda SLFP organiser Prasanna Ranatunga includes two Pradeshiya Sabha chairmen, two mayors, one deputy mayor, a university student and a senior journalist. The number of female candidates is four.
The group’s Deputy Leader is former Provincial Council Minister and Gampaha District SLFP Organiser Nimal Lansa.
Nominations will be accepted up to 12 noon on Thursday, 6 February.
