The Upcountry People’s Front has decided to reconsider its unconditional support to President Mahinda Rajapaksa in view of the sudden political changes unfolding in the country.
UPF General Secretary A. Lawrence told a news conference in Hatton yesterday that the party had already informed the President that it would be supporting his candidature.
“From the time of Chandrasekaran, the UPF has always made a contribution when there have been major elections,” Lawrence said. “We always make that decision based on our people’s needs,” he added.
Lawrence noted that the party would have to meet to discuss the decision, but acknowledged that the process could even mean continuing its support to President Rajapaksa. The party has met to discuss the issue yesterday, UPF Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister Radhakrishnan said.
The party has a single MP in the ruling UPFA coalition.
