Unqualified school principals on the rise

By Ashwin Hemmathagama Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena on Wednesday revealed the alarming status of the educational system in the Southern Province, which houses 382 unqualified principals. Responding to a question raised by opposition lawmaker Sajith Premadasa, Minister Gunawardena said: “Out of 1,115 school principals in the Southern Province 729 have completed the educational requirements.” According to Minister Gunawardena, in 2011 the Government had called applications from suitable candidates to fill the vacancies in the principal service. “From the applications we received 1,399 were recruited. They are listed in the grade 2 (i) of principal service while 132 have been recruited for the grade 3 of the principal service in August 2012,” he added.
