Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says the UNP will launch its attempt to topple the Government through the Uva Provincial Council elections. The Uva elections are expected to take place by November this year and presidential elections are likely early next year. Speaking at an event in Bandarawela yesterday, Wickremesinghe said the country now has a good opportunity to topple the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government. He noted that the Government had promised several concessions to the public but has instead burdened them with increasing prices on essential goods. “The cost of living is increasing. Once a month, the cost of living is increasing. After the war the public expected concessions, but those concessions are being enjoyed by the Government,” he said. Wickremesinghe said the Government would now look at obtaining the votes of the people at the next election by distributing sarees and liquor bottles. (Colombo Gazette)
