By Waruni Paranagamage Deputy Foreign Minister Ajith P. Perera yesterday stressing on the importance of a new electoral system urged the Government to increase the amount of female representatives in Parliament via the new system. Commenting on the new electoral system at a press briefing, the Deputy Minister said the Government should give 50% representation to female candidates via the National List. He said the Government also should introduce a compulsory proportion of female candidates in district nomination lists to increase female political participation. “We have a low level of female participation in Parliament compared even with Afghanistan, so we should think of enhancing female political participation,” Perera added.
