By Waruni Paranagamage Deputy Foreign Minister Ajith P. Perera yesterday stressing on the importance of a new electoral system urged the Government to increase the amount of female representatives in Parliament via the new system. Commenting on the new electoral system at a press briefing, the Deputy Minister said the Government should give 50% representation to female candidates via the National List. He said the Government also should introduce a compulsory proportion of female candidates in district nomination lists to increase female political participation. “We have a low level of female participation in Parliament compared even with Afghanistan, so we should think of enhancing female political participation,” Perera added. The Deputy Minister also stated that the Government has created a proper atmosphere for the Police, Courts and officials in the country to implement the law without political interference.
