UNP to go to Courts if crossover MPs vote for impeachment

The UNP will take legal action against any MP elected under the elephant symbol that votes in support of the impeachment resolution against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake in Parliament tomorrow, the Party’s Senior Vice President Lakshman Kiriella said yesterday.

The Party has already issued writs on all legislators that contested on the UNP ticket in the 2010 Parliamentary Election, even though they have now crossed over to the Government. The UNP has lost 16 MPs inclusive of the eight seats won by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress since the April 2010 General Election.

Kiriella said that neither Parliament nor the Speaker had the jurisdiction to override what Supreme Court deems unconstitutional even if they happened to disagree with the ruling. He added that although the Government had scheduled a debate on the motion based on the findings of the PSC report, that report had been nullified by the courts of law and no longer exists. (DB)
