The opposition party has put forward a capable team of candidates led by mayoral candidate A.J. M. Muzammil for the Colombo Municipal Council, the party’s national organiser Ravi Karunanayake said yesterday.

Addressing a media briefing, the parliamentarian said the party will once again win the CMC and end the government’s corruption and suppression of people and establish democracy to bring relief to the masses.

The opposition parliamentarian accused the government of destroying the people’s properties in Colombo provided by the UNP when it was in power and selling the valuable land to foreigners cheaply to fill the government politicians’ pockets and urged all parties to set aside party, race and religion differences and unite to defeat the government.

He said, the government has earmarked 65,000 houses to be demolished in the city so that the land can be sold to foreigners.

The party will soon put forward a plan to rebuild the capital city with the latest technology to fit the modern world and uplift the lives of people in the city and the country, the MP said.

Karunanayake asserted that the UNP will face the challenges and defeat the government despite its power, resources and suppression of democracy to secure a historic win for the UNP in Colombo at the upcoming elections for the local bodies in October.  (Colombo Page)
