The main opposition United National Party (UNP) says preparations by the party have almost been finalised to contest the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that the UNP Working Committee would meet next week and decide on the members to be named to the board.
He said that the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections were likely to take place before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year this year.
Attanayake said that interviews had been concluded with UNP applicants for the polls and last minute applications were now being reviewed.
Attanayake also said some Government members had expressed the desire to join the UNP and contest the polls for the two provinces.
