The main opposition United National Party (UNP) today urged voters to make use of their ballots on 21 September instead of boycotting the election. UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that boycotting the election will be an incentive for the Government. He says the public should vote against the Government on the basis that the Government has failed to fulfil its promises made at past elections. The UNP Leader also noted that the prices of several items including electricity had gone up and so the public should now say “enough is enough”. “Boycotting the election is like giving oxygen to the Government,” he said. The UNP Leader also said that a massive protest campaign is to be launched aimed at having a new Government in 2014. He says the 21 September elections will be the first step towards defeating the Government in 2014. (Colombo Gazette)
