The United National Party (UNP) yesterday called on the government to increase the salaries of the public sector employees by Rs. 10,000 with a similar increase for the private sector as well.
UNP parliamentarian Joseph Michael Perera has said that trade unions affiliated to the party will join all other trade unions to launch a massive strike if the government fails to increase the salaries of the working masses.
He said the government has to grant the salary in its budget for 2011.
Meanwhile, the JVP affiliated trade unions have called on the government to increase the salaries of public sector employees by Rs. 8,000.
The JVP unions together with several other unions have already launched protest campaigns demanding the increment.
