The main opposition United National Party (UNP) yesterday said the private sector in the country should be presented with a government funded pension scheme.
UNP Spokesperson and parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatileka told a press conference that the government should not introduce a pension scheme for the private sector that is contributory scheme on the part of the private sector worker.
He said the pension scheme for the private sector should be similar to the pension scheme for the members of parliament.
“The pension scheme should benefit the workers until their death,” he observed.
Karunatileka also added that the people are finding it difficult to live due to the constantly increasing cost of living.
In such a backdrop, he said the government should take measures to grant a salary hike to the private sector workers instead of forcing a pension scheme that would further reduce their salaries.
