UK wants concrete progress on reconciliation, press freedom ahead of CHOGM

The UK Government on Tuesday stressed that Sri Lanka needs to make concrete progress on reconciliation and media freedom ahead of a major Commonwealth summit in Colombo in November. UK Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt tweeted yesterday that this message had been conveyed when he met with the Sri Lankan Envoy to the UK Dr. Chris Nonis “Met HC Dr. Chris Nonis today to discuss importance of concrete progress in reconciliation and media freedom in Sri Lanka ahead of CHOGM,” Minister Burt said on his Twitter page. The UK Minister said he had also raised Khuram Shaikh, the British tourist murdered in Sri Lanka in 2011. “Crucial the accused face fair trial without political interference,” Burt tweeted. (DB)
