The Mirihana Special Crime Investigation Unit of Police has arrested two persons in connection with the shooting that killed a Police Narcotic Bureau officer and an 11-year-old girl and injured three others last month.
The two suspects were arrested during a raid carried out by the special operations unit of the Mirihana Police in Dharga. The Police said the 27 and 34 year old suspects are residents of Ahungalla.
They were produced before the Kesbewa Magistrates court.
Two armed gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a team of officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau in Piliyandala when the team, on information received, arrived to bust a large drug racketeering gang in Piliyandala on 9th May.
Police Constable Chaminda Abeywickreme was killed at the shooting and an 11-year-old girl, succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo last Friday. Police Inspector M. Neomal Rangajeewa, Constable Chaminda of the Police Narcotic Bureau and a teenage boy suffered serious injuries.
