The Sri Lankan Government has awarded scholarships to two Afghan students to receive training at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

Giving consideration to a request made by the former President of Afghanistan, Hameed Karzai, during his visit to Sri Lanka in 2014, the Cabinet has approved a proposal made by President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Defence, to provide training opportunities for two Afghan students by awarding them scholarships.

The university, which was established with the objective of providing personnel of the armed services with aesthetic and professional skills, implements several graduate programs in various sectors and meets the higher education requirements of cadet officers and students.

The General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University has provided educational opportunities to two students from countries in the African and Asian regions on the basis of enhancing cooperation between these countries on a non-payment basis.
