President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday exhorted the newly elected Provincial Councillors to dedicate themselves to convert their electoral victory into a people’s victory instead of treating this as a personal victory for themselves.
Meeting the recently elected Provincial Councillors of the Sabaragamuwa and the North Central Provinces at Temple Trees to congratulate them on the UPFA’s victory, the President requested them to work together with responsibility identifying the needs and aspirations of the people instead of gloating over their victory.
He said Provincial Councils too had a great responsibility entrusted on them vis-a-vis the country.
President Rajapaksa told the new councillors he got the opportunity recently to view firsthand the lives led by the people in difficult areas adding these people lived in great expectation about the outcome of the country’s development and it was their responsibility to ensure these expectations are duly fulfilled.
The President told the councillors that future challenges could be successfully confronted only by working together in brotherhood and that the victory achieved by defeating three decades of terrorism can only be converted to a real triumph if the people’s expectations are fulfilled to the maximum.
Senior Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka, Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva and Basil Rajapaksa together with ministers and MPs representing the NCP and Sabaragamuwa were also present.
