Construction of two tunnel watercourses are underway to control floods in Colombo city, the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development confirmed in Parliament yesterday. These two tunnel watercourses will be used to pump water from the Nagalagam Street to the Kelani River to control floods in the city.
According to the Ministry, the project received an initial loan approval for $ 250 m from the World Bank and a loan of $ 213 m from the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development to commence construction. Updating Parliament on the progress, he said that 29 packages out of 55 are completed, with nine more in design finalisation.
During different stages of the project the outflow capacity from the drainage system will be enhanced. (AH)
