A trade union representing local government workers has alleged that people have been recruited to the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) after elections to the Council was announced.

The All Ceylon Local Government Workers’ Union alleges that nearly 40 persons had been recruited to the CMC in such a manner.

The new employees had been recruited on a casual basis to be assigned to several district offices, the union has said.

The new recruits had been employed as casual employees after interviewing them for permanent positions at the CMC, the union added.

Meanwhile, CMC Special Commissioner Omar Kamil has told the media that the Council had planned to recruit some workers but had later decided against it following a directive by the Elections Commissioner.

Kamil has however, admitted that several persons had been recruited to work on contract basis for several projects which were funded by the World Bank.

According to the Commissioner, the said recruitments did not come under electoral laws since the projects were funded by a foreign agency. (Colombo Page)
