Civilian administration was restored in the District of Trincomalee after eight years yesterday, with the region’s new Government Agent N.A.A. Pushpakumara appointed to replace retired Major General P.T. De Silva. District Secretary of Trincomalee over the past eight years has been an appointee nominated by the military, recently held by Maj. Gen. (retired) P.T.R. De Silva. De Silva was the only military officer serving in the senior civil administrative position. Under his administration, the presence of military officers around him as he went among the public was a regular occurrence. Eastern Province Secretary for the Public Service Commission H.E.M.W.G. Dissanayake expressed gratitude to all those who helped to bring about the change and also explained how hard it had been to make the change.
