Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake yesterday said that the Cabinet is firm in imposing the law on traffic offences following discussions.

“The Cabinet decided to impose the regulations in an even more stringent manner,” he claimed, adding that those who want to break the law should not be tolerated.

The minister claimed that fines for offences such as driving without licenses and underage driving would be increased to a range within Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000.

However, he assured that penalties for minor offenses such as illegal parking will not be increased.

“People want to break the law and not be punished for it. The private bus owners want to strike against the fines. So let them strike,” he said.

Karunanayake also said that the fines should be imposed in a structured, regulated manner and should not be misused.
