The Coordinating Committee for a Joint Trade Union Alliance has organised a series of island-wide protests to demand that the Government implement the 21 demands presented by the trade unions. The Committee has already submitted its 21 demands to the Finance Ministry to be included in the Government’s 2014 Budget proposals.
Protests under the campaign were already held in Anuradhapura, Matara and Gampaha, with the participation of nearly 1,000 protestors in each agitation. The protestors called for relief for the working masses from the Government since they do not receive their dues for keeping the country’s economy in operation.
An executive member of the Committee said it would continue with the protests until the 2014 Budget presentation on 21 November and would intensify the campaign if the Government fails to grant relief to the workers in the Budget.
