Torrential rains causing havoc

Heavy rains lashed the country yesterday with many parts of the country going under water. One death and heavy damage to property was reported due to the floods and torrential showers. The Galle District in the Southern Province was the worst affected. The Elpitiya-Pitigala road was flooded as the Gin Ganga overflowed. The fate of a family that lived at the foot of a mountain was in doubt as their house was completely under water by evening and there was no news of the occupants. Around 450 families in Ambalangoda were also displaced by the floods. A 27-year-old man who went to see the floods disappeared in the waters at Karandeniya in the Galle District. The Badulla District Secretary issued a warning to people living close to the banks of Badulu Oya that was almost spilling over. Flash floods inundated two rooms of the magistrates at the Mount Lavinia court premises in the outskirts of Colombo city yesterday disrupting normal court work. Authorities have urged residents in the flood affected areas to take precautions.
